
What is BASE?
BASE (Behavioral, Academic & Social Enrichment) is a program which utilizes Applied Behavior Analysis methodology for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders, ages 6 - 21. It is a center based, full day program that provides 12 month academic, social and behavior treatment.Â

The primary goal of the program is to develop the academic, communicative, social, life skills and career development skills necessary for successful functioning at home, school, and community. Instruction and therapeutic interventions focus on the development of skills and behaviors necessary to maximize opportunities for independen
ce and productive living. Â
BASE program is currently offered at Gersh Academy in Glen Oaks, NY.
What makes this program unique?
BASE Institute is founded on the belief that a true team approach is key to the success of our students.
Each team is comprised of the parent(s) / guardian(s), the program director, a special education teacher, a school psychologist, an assistant teacher / 1:1 aide, a speech / language therapist, an occupational therapist, a physical therapist, a social worker, and a consulting psychiatrist when necessary.
Other features include:
- All staff members receive intensive training on Autism Spectrum Disorders and principals of Applied Behavior Analysis and Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention.
- Daily parental communication as well as on-site training increases success at home.  We also are open to working with any outside professionals that have knowledge of the student.
- Language Skills Development:Â Â Â Pragmatic skills training use of PECS (Picture Exchange, Communication Symbols), oral motor development, articulation training, and augmentative communication devices.
- Career Development:Â Self-interest inventory, vocational assessment, job training/coaching, and student internships
- Life Skills Preparation:  Leisure skills development and practical life skills lessons such as money management, meal preparation, personal hygiene, and community access training, etc.
- Social skills: curriculum that includes social stories, role playing, social scripting and effective communication.
- Students receive instruction in drama, art, physical education and foreign language.
- Gersh Academy offers students in grades 7 - 12 the opportunity to participate in a transition / vocational planning program. This program is designed to support students in a professional manner and give them the tools they need to live an independent life.
- Students receive personalized attention due to small student to teacher ratios. Elementary: 6:1:1 student to teacher ratio Middle School: 8:1:1 student to teacher ratio  High School:  8:1:1 student to teacher ratio
