BASE INSTITUTE

Program Objective

Our six week academic summer program provides an exciting and positive experience for students with special needs. This program is designed to prevent regression during the summer months, as well as expose students to a variety of recreational summer activities. Academic instruction is provided in a classroom environment by certified special education teachers.

Program Features

Students enjoy art, music, physical education, computers, weekly academic themes, and ongoing recreational activities. Our program helps students to build confidence, gain acceptance, and develop long lasting friendships.

FIELD TRIPS
Weekly field trips are planned according to the curriculum. Each week students visit the beach for nature lessons as well as swimming at local pools. Eligible students participate in an over night camp excursion to foster independence.

RECREATION & SOCIAL EXPLORATION
Students are assisted in developing interest in social and recreational activities. They are encouraged to find ways to get involved during non-academic hours.

Program View

Transition Planning

Gersh Academy's transition program is designed to increase the independence and employability of students in grades 6 - 12. The goal of the program is to provide hands-on instruction that will prepare students to navigate the work place & become familiar with independent living skills

WORLD OF WORK TOURS
Students gain valuable work experience by truly "getting their feet wet" in a real work environment.

  • Food preparation in commercial kitchens, focusing on culinary arts and facility sanitation
  • Behind the scene operations at Fortune 500 companies
  • Horse therapy and stable maintenance on a working farm
  • Fishing on a 33 foot power boat experiencing nautical practices and open sea navigation


EMPLOYMENT CLASS & COLLEGE PREPARATION
Students are guided and supported in college / career planning.

  • Resume and portfolio development
  • College application and essay writing
  • Interview skills and proper attire
  • Opportunities for paid internship


COMMUNITY ACCESS TRAINING AND INDEPENDENT LIFE SKILLS
